TUDENTS AND FACULTY
Of course, everyone who has heard about Savannah Law, wants to know more about Professor Denis Nolan, Jennifer Stone, Scott Marino, Max Gordon and Jaak Terras. These are the main characters in the novel, but I've got strict orders not to discuss them. (It wouldn't be much of a read if you knew about all the characters before you start, would it?)
But I can tell you this much about Professor Nolan. Being the son of one of the school's founders can have its good side and bad. No matter how hard you work, someone will always say "it was handed to you by your dad." I don't think that's true in this case. Denis Nolan graduated from the University of Virginia Law School and had a law practice in Chicago before he was hired. Still, he was one really strange bird. If you get out to Tybee Island, ask someone for directions to the Nolan place on the beach; the view is worth the trip. Professor Nolan could really throw a party. One of them—a really big one—is in the Novel.
You probably know a little about Jennifer already. She graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design, and then in an unusual career choice, entered law school. She expected law school to be difficult; what she didn't expect was the terrorizing events she would endure during her first few weeks. Maybe that's the downside of being beautiful. I know a couple guys who would have given their left "you know what," just to have her smile at them. I think she only had eyes for Scott, but I'm not sure. Professor Nolan surely had eyes for her, but is that bad? He's a young professor—working in a candy factory and can't sample the candy? Who says?
Well, Scott, for one. He warned Jennifer about Denis Nolan. Scott may be right. Can you keep a secret? I saw Jennifer and Professor Nolan in his office one night—I was making a security tour of the campus, well after school hours. I'm not suggesting anything—just stating facts.
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say anything at all about Craig, the tow truck driver who came to the campus when Jennifer's car broke down. I wasn't on duty that night, but any major crime on campus reflects on me as Security Chief. Nothing like that's happened since but it still gives me nightmares.
I've got to get back to my office to meet with that GBI agent. There's a lot more for you to see, but you can do it on your own. Savannah College of Law wouldn't be half as much fun—or as successful—if the "Library" wasn't next door. I don't mean the school's library; it's OK, but what I'm talking about is the Library Bar and Grill, just a block from the south parking lot. It's the center of student activity on Friday and Saturday nights (and most other nights for some students). Tell Juri, the bartender, that Chief Kelly sent you and he'll have a good story—or a joke—to tell. You can't have a real visit to Savannah without a visit to the Library. Just click the "The Library Bar and Grill" gray block at the top right.
